What is the smallest an island could be to sustain life?

When I say life I mean like if there were castaways like in lost that they could survive...I know that this couldn't happen but I was just wondering how big a land mass would have to be ( in square miles ) to have enough vegetation/insects etc for a group of humans to live on.
