Why is it in movies, that pilots are extremely expendable?

Just to add twist to movie plot. If they lost the pilot, one of the characters can volunteer by virtue of his 20,000 hours of playing virtual pilot or something. Because of his/her inexperience, there can be subplots for added drama and suspense. The movie is no fun if the pilot remains alive. Lol.
